Create a Blue Ocean Strategy in Four Steps

W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne (2005): BLUE OCEAN STRATEGY, How to create uncontested market space & make the competition irrelevant. Harvard Business School Press.

Australian Casella wines created a blue ocean strategy that, in just two years, caused its wine to become the fastest growing brand in the histories of both the Australian and the U.S. wine industries and the number one imported wine into the United States, surpassing the wines of France and Italy.

Below are the steps they took to create a blue ocean strategy steps that any company can take to get out of the red ocean of competition:

1) Eliminate factors that the industry takes for granted but adds no perceived value to customers.

Casella Wines recognized that most wineries touted aging and tannin qualities, two factors that intimidated customers. Casella decided to focus their efforts on different qualities.

2) Reduce factors well below the industry.s standard to avoid the mistake of over delivering in order to beat the competition.

To avoid customer confusion, Casella Wines limited their offerings to just one white wine and one red wine.

3) Raise factors well above the industry.s standard so your customer won.t have to make compromises.

Casella Wines raised the involvement of retailers with it.s success by giving retail employees Australian outback clothing that made seem friendly instead of intimidating like other wines.

4) Create new sources of value that the industry has never offered.

Casella wines created new customer experiences for wine drinking: easy drinking, ease of selection, and a sense of fun and adventure.

Africa …. to be or not to be…. what a huge question, where can one begin ?
Well to start with it is essential to have a profound knowledge of it’s people, traditions, customs and history which vary so much from East to West and North to South ! I believe that the younger generation have a far better concept of what Africa should be when one and that it would be far more profitable to start putting back into this continent what we have over generations taken out.
Could it be possible that we may be to blame for some of the terrible conditions and the violence that now exists in some of the African countries ? Did we first go to this wonderful country only to rob it of all it’s natural resources as well as its people, that we are in many respects responsable ? What will be your answers ?
I had a rather good laugh when I thought of who might become the next President of the United States of America….., I wondered what Mr. Obahama’s origins were…., how they arrived in America …, where were they torn from…???
I then thought look what education, formation, determination, freedom and hope can do and of course financial investment.
We now have a generation of young people who are now realising that it is time to take care of these issues and combine the education of the locals so that they can exploit their own countries in the correct manner using one of the largest means of income for many of
these countries which is tourism .
Using tourism in the correct manner … creating employment for locals and showing them how to continue on there own, opens the doors to so many other domains , Hotels, Resorts, training centres for staff, new residences, Hospitals, schools…. teachers are needed
safe infra structures will be needed….
So what are we waiting for I am sure that out there some where there are people with the financial resources to help start a New Africa,
so if you are out there get in touch and help us get started ……..

  4. Thanks for this comment Sheryl & sorry for the delay but I’ve been quite busy here. (Good!)
Quite a wide point of view you offer…
I’m actually trying to convince & train some key people of my University to come on network, since “2.0 & Social Media” aren’t like “universally understood” at this point of our global history. But it’s coming fast! “A black face in the white house”, sounds like a good movie hehe… Let’s see how is the scenario like ;) Maybe you will like this video clip: “We, the people 2.0. Revolution March 17/06/2008 (this is History, Live):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjauAv6I-E8
I’m wondering if Obama will go this march?
Anyway, education, formation, self determination, freedom, creativity, hope, this is all coming trough internet now, so let’s network!
Pleae keep in contact & making comments.
    Kind regards,
    Stef
